Top films of 2012 | Betsy Sharkey
It was a year so rich that it made the winnowing extremely difficult. There are 30 or so more films that I struggled to shoehorn in but couldn't. These survived that painful process -- my 2012 Top 10, with a few ties, a few honorable mentions. -- Times Film Critic Betsy Sharkey

'Zero Dark Thirty'
Rooted in the 10-year hunt for 9/11 architect Osama bin Laden, this is director Kathryn Bigelow's first work since her Oscar-winning "The Hurt Locker," another cut at that region. The story is even more intense as it examines how the consequences of the Middle East conflict drive those on the ground. Jessica Chastain's performance is worth its weight in gold.
