'Star Wars' at the box office

A new "Star Wars" trilogy is destined for theaters after <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-disney-lucasfilm-20121030,0,3821750.story" target="_blank">Disney announced Oct. 30, 2012</a>, that it was buying Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion.

"Star Wars: Episode 7" is targeted to open in 2015, with Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy serving as executive producer. George Lucas won't write or direct the films, but will serve as creative consultant. <a href="http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/10/30/star-wars-three-new-movies-lucas-wont-write-or-direct/" target="_blank">Lucas said that he has story treatments</a> for Episodes Seven, Eight and Nine in the space opera, and that he is handing over a "treasure trove" of intellectual property to Kennedy.

"I'm doing this so that the films will have a longer life, so more people can enjoy them in the future," Lucas said. "I get to be a fan now. I sort of look forward to it."
