Nonstop week of music surrounds Chicago Jazz Festival

Dianne Reeves: Ours is not a great era for jazz singing. But Reeves stands as the exception that proves the rule, the sensuous depth of her instrument matched by the originality of her improvisations. 8: 30 p.m. at Petrillo Music Shell

Jeremy Kahn Sextet: Last year, Kahn — one of Chicago's most versatile jazz pianists — was robbed by the elements, a downpour stopping his tribute to music of Pepper Adams just after it got started. Kahn richly deserves this make-up spot, and if the weather cooperates, perhaps he'll get to address the Adams repertoire after all. 1:10 p.m. at the Jazz on Jackson Stage

Tito Carrillo: He teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, but Carrillo remains a Chicago jazz musician at heart, as his periodic returns here demonstrate. Last year, he gained national notice with his belated recording debut as bandleader, "Opening Statement," Afro-Latin tinged music he's sure to revisit here. 3:30 p.m. at the Jazz and Heritage Stage

Pierre Dorge and the New Jungle Orchestra: Old music meets new perspectives, and new music embraces some traditional values in Dorge's work with his long-running New Jungle Orchestra. Whether re-inventing music of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk or absorbing their influences in Dorge's original compositions, the New Jungle Orchestra approaches the vast sweep of jazz history fearlessly. 6 p.m. at Petrillo Music Shell

Steve Coleman and Five Elements: Saxophonist-bandleader Coleman was deeply influenced by the late Von Freeman, and he undoubtedly will take this occasion to offer a musical homage. 7:10 p.m. at Petrillo Music Shell

Allen Toussaint's "The Bright Mississippi": Purists might argue that the New Orleans songwriter, pianist, producer and reluctant singer doesn't fit the strictest definition of jazz, and skeptics would point out that Toussaint has played music from his widely admired recording "The Bright Mississippi" on several occasions in the Chicago area. All true, all irrelevant, considering the beauty of Toussaint's songs and the naturalness of his delivery. He'll be joined by guitarist Marc Ribot and reedist Don Byron. 8:30 p.m. at Petrillo Music Shell

Ira Sullivan and Stu Katz: Multi-instrumentalist Sullivan and pianist Katz — who have collaborated on and off for decades — lead sessions, with various Jazz Festival headliners and sidemen dropping in. 6 p.m. to midnight Wednesday (due to the Jazz Club Tour) and 8 and 10 p.m. Thursday through Sept. 2 at Jazz Showcase, 806 S.
