Steve Kuhn: The eminent, hyper-sensitive, uncommonly versatile pianist rarely performs in Chicago, which makes this engagement in one of the city's best jazz rooms a major event. Kuhn will lead a trio, with drummer Joey Baron and bassist Eric Hochberg. 9 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Green Mill Jazz Club, 4802 N. Broadway; $15; 773-878-5552 or

Bobby Lewis: A lyrical trumpeter to the core, Lewis brings elegant understatement to practically everything he plays, at any and all tempos. He'll appear here in a more intimate context than usual, duetting with pianist Jim Ryan. 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Katerina's, 1920 W. Irving Park Rd.; $5; 773-348-7592 or

Jazz Community Big Band: Marianne May's ensemble specializes in music of Count Basie, Thad Jones and Stan Kenton, among others, and will be joined by powerhouse Chicago singer Tammy McCann. Considering the intimacy of the performance space – Room 43 – there should be plenty of sound. Presented by the non-profit Hyde Park Jazz Society. 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sunday at Room 43, 1043 E. 43d St.; valet parking available; $10;

Chicago Jazz Orchestra: Jeff Lindberg's seasoned ensemble recently acquitted itself quite well in a Benny Goodman tribute concert at the Ravinia Festival, in Highland Park. Now the ensemble has taken up a weekly residency at Andy's Jazz Club, a smallish room that rumbles when the band is going full tilt. 5:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. sets; $15; 312-642-6805 or

Patricia Barber: The singular Chicago singer-pianist-songwriter returns to her weekly slot at the Green Mill Jazz Club after a period of touring in support of "Smash," her critically applauded new album of original material. She's joined by guitarist John Kregor, bassist Matt Ulery and drummer Jon Deitemyer. 9 p.m. Monday at the Green Mill Jazz Club, 4802 N. Broadway; $7; 773-878-5552 or

Fred Lonberg-Holm: A ceaselessly inventive cellist-bandleader, Lonberg-Holm performs on the Tuesdays on the Terrace series, a distinctly Chicago attraction in which forward-looking jazz musicians perform outdoors, surrounding by the cityscape. In case of rain, the music-making moves indoors. 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave.; free; 312-280-2660 or
