Short of stature but huge in talent, Chicago tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin was known around the world as the “Little Giant.”

He ranked among the greatest tenor men produced by this city — or any other — and his death in France in 2008, at age 80, left a void.

But Griffin's larger-than-life legacy will be celebrated with sets at 7:30 and 9 p.m. April 4 in the Performance Penthouse of the University of Chicago's Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E. 60th St. “A Tribute to Johnny Griffin” will be performed by the Michael Weiss Quartet.

Weiss will be joined by Chicagoan Eric Schneider, a fiery tenor saxophonist in his own right, who will share the stage with bassist Lorin Cohen and drummer George Fludas.

Admission to the event, presented by the Hyde Park Jazz Society and the Logan Center, will be $10 general, $5 for students; 773-702-2787 or ticketsweb.uchicago.edu.
