Ike Barinholtz, a writer and co-star on the Fox sitcom “The Mindy Project,” has been cast as the male lead in the Tina Fey-Amy Poehler movie “The Nest.”

The comedy is about a pair of sisters who decide to throw one final party to end all parties before selling the family home. Barinholtz will play the next door neighbor who develops feelings for Poehler’s character, and vice versa.

“I’m going to go to every house party in Los Angeles next week for research before we start shooting,” he joked (one hopes) when reached by phone Thursday.  “So you’ll see me on the news.  I’ll be arrested.”

What about the craziest thing he has ever done at a party? “I called the police on my own party one time because I wanted everyone to leave! Just stupid. It was too much and I had to call the police. They came and I was like, ‘What do you want?’ I had to pretend like I hadn’t called them to retain my cool. It was a bad situation.”

The project is notable for its share of talent who cut their teeth in Chicago: Barinholtz (who grew up in the Lakeview neighborhood), Fey and Poehler all started out in the local comedy scene. Director Jason Moore (“Pitch Perfect”) is a Northwestern University alum. And screenwriter Paula Pell (a writer for “Saturday Night Live” since 1995) hails from Joliet.

Barinholtz first became friendly with Fey in 1997 when she was on the Second City mainstage in “Paradigm Lost” and he was working as an usher: “The big perk of the job was that you got to watch this amazing performer every night. And sometimes you would have to clean up from some senior on prom night who threw up in the theater. That was the tradeoff.”

Shooting on “The Nest” begins later this month. Barinholtz had this to say about the role: “On a scale of Morgan Tookers (his 'Mindy Project' character) to Ike Barinholtz (in real life), where Morgan Tookers is a 10 and Ike Barinholtz is a zero, this guy is a three. He’s a very real, down-to-earth nice guy.”

When filming wraps he will head back to work on Season 3 of “The Mindy Project.”  (An iO alum, he said he is trying to make time for a trip to Chicago in August, when the theater officially moves to its new location in the Clybourn Corridor).

Barinholtz can currently be seen playing Seth Rogen’s loser buddy in “Neighbors.”
