NBC, which renewed “Chicago Fire” last month for a second season, has announced that it is also picking up the show’s police-themed spinoff.
“Chicago PD”--from the same people who make “Chicago Fire,” including producer Dick Wolf and creators Derek Haas and Michael Brandt--will be shot here in its entirety and have more in common with a show like “Hill Street Blues” than the typical high-concept crime procedurals that have become predominant on network TV.
Haas told the Tribune late last month that earlier this year he and his colleagues spent “four days riding around with cops and detectives and we got to see the inner workings of the police department, and it was like, why isn’t this as a show?” The same way that we did it with the fire department, there’s a show in what it means to be a policeman in Chicago. So that’s what we’re going for.”
The show's backdoor pilot (setting the stage for the spinoff) is the penultimate episode of “Chicago Fire,” which airs next week.
