"This Moose Belongs to Me"

By Oliver Jeffers

Philomel, $16.99, ages 4-8

"He hadn't always owned a moose" but he "knew, just KNEW that it was meant to be his." Wilfrid is an organized child. He names the moose "Marcel," tries to instruct it in rules ("Rule 7: going whichever way Wilfrid wants to go") and is devastated one day when he and the moose encounter an old lady who exclaims, "Rodrigo! You're back!" Ownership disputes are resolved delicately. The best line of all comes in describing Wilfrid on his first journey home sans Marcel. "It was past his home time now, and the monsters would be out soon." Jeffers plays well in the "Wild Things" league.
