By Lois Lowry
Houghton Mifflin, $17.99, ages 12-16
Many readers remember Lois Lowry's "The Giver" (1993) — a dystopic fantasy about a community with rigid roles — because they debated its open ending in class, somewhere from middle school to college. Later, "Gathering Blue" (2000) and "Messenger' (2004) added details obliquely. Now Lowry finishes it. We meet Claire, a "Birthmother," forbidden to bond with the "Product." Against the rules, Claire discovers facts about her child that lead her elsewhere. (No spoilers here.) The ending this time? Satisfying, delivered by a writer at the top of her game.
