'In a Glass Grimmly'
By Adam Gidwitz
Dutton, $16.99, ages 10-14
Don't miss the double m's in "Grimmly," as in the style of Grimm's Fairy Tales. As the narrator says, "If you've been raised on the drivel that passes for fairy tales these days, you're not going to believe a word that I'm saying," but promises that the following story will be both "revolting" and "beautiful — like the gray and golden ashes in a fireplace." Throughout the book, the narrator's remarks to readers add up to more than just a Mel Brooks voice-over. They reveal that these bits and pieces of fairy-tale plots all connect, in the journey of two children named Jack and Jill, whom you thought you knew.
